Eugen Gomringer - "One of the founders of the Concrete Poetry movement, and an art historian and critic as well as a widely published poet.."
As a student in Berne, Gomringer was in contact with painters involved with concrete art. He was deeply inspired by the international exhibition of concrete art in Basel, organised by Max Bill in 1944; and in the following years he made the acquaintance of Bill, Lohse and Graeser at the Galerie des Eaux Vives in Zurich, a special gallery for concrete paintings. He was motivated by the visual arts movement to adopt the same philosophy in his poetry, and so concrete poetry was born in Europe. Since that time he has worked with many important artists, and has published numerous works.
Gomringer is coming to London at the invitation of the Small Publishers Fair, to give a presentation and reading, and will be introduced by Professor Stephen Bann.
3pm Saturday 13th October in the Brockway Room at the Conway Hall, Red Lion Square London WC1
